As the audience has grown a tiny bit for my novel, I’m seeing that the people who enjoy it or are willing to review it are different than whom I thought might do so. I am starting to discover that the work, in this case my novel, begins to define it’s audience for itself. It is very interesting and sort of eerie.

Another post on this as I put together what’s been going on in my head since I had surgery.
Basically, writing is my means of spiritual development, and it is a means of supplementing my writing income. So I try to balance staying true to who I am and appealing to people who might want to pay for what I write.

Brenda,
I very much liked the way you contrasted your casual take on Christianity, centered around social expectations and your more private beliefs later on. I loved Oncers 🙂
I think a little editing would make it flow better. For example instead of “I was excited to get to be involved,” try, “I was excited to be involved.” They say the same, but eliminating extra words improves ones style greatly.

Hi,
I’m back from surgery and I’m going to start the class over again from the beginning. Hope to connect with former classmates and new as well.

I just noticed the Schmidt coincidence. 🙂
I didn’t mind being in the hospital, hospital care in Mexico is completely different. I was treated like royalty by everyone, all of whom, and I mean clerks, janitors, nurses, docs, everyone treated me with respect and love.
Of course that is how most Mexicans treat everyone and it is why I live here.

Thanks so much Christy and James. I appreciate your good thoughts.

The concept of audience is a difficult one for me, because I write about the horrible things that are going on in the world and why and how people make justifications to themselves to let those things continue.
I know that I upset people. One reader told me that they had nightmares. Yet, they also said they couldn’t put the book down.
I don’t understand why I need to write about what I do, nor why people find reading such things a compelling experience.
It’s a mystery to me. My next novel, is also about how we justify ourselves, but takes a lighter touch.
I’m having a hard time envisioning who my audience is. But I know that I’m supposed to write what I’m writing.
For marketing purposes and tagging, everything is labeled paranormal thriller, but I would like to think it is literary fiction that is a page turner and which defines reality in very broad terms 🙂

Thanks Ebony.

James,
Thanks so much for kind words.
Surgery was a success. But recuperating in bed and typing one finger on iPad.
So am going to copy Facebook status update here for everyone.

Everybody,
Come visit San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where I live. Last Year Conde Nast named it the number one city in the world to visit.
For writers, annually there is an incredible international writers conference, even though I’m biassed, many people would agree with me that it is the best they’ve ever attended. Here’s a link:
http://sanmiguelwritersconference2014.org
If anyone does come visit, please let me know, and I’ll show you around.

Thanks. And of course only if you have the time. I appreciate it.

Sunny,
Thanks so much for the careful read.
I should be ashamed for putting up the story without a more careful edit.
No excuses, but just trying to turn in the homework …
I would very much appreciate you pointing out to me exactly where you got lost so I can fix it.
Thanks,
Michael
