Mad Men is like my broccoli. I know it’s good for me, but if I have a choice, I’ll choose something else. But I’m so happy you like it. You’ll have to explain the appeal to me sometime.

I’m kind of with Joe, here. The hubs and I tried several times to watch it, but I couldn’t get past the gender dynamics. But I know so many who do love it, including feminists!! Tell us what it is that you find so absorptive. Maybe I can get over some things, if it’s worthwhile!

Good point about the gender dynamics, Jody. Interestingly, the writers are actually women who wanted to focus on the sexism of the era.

I think my love for the show is tied to my love of classic film, history, pop culture. Or maybe I feel a connection because I’ve dated too many men like Don Draper. :p In all seriousness, Mad Men does a great job of dramatizing the art of advertising and copywriting in the 1960s. These mad men have to write stories to sell products, and watching them do that fascinates me. Yes, there’s a lot of sexism and racism, cheating husbands and cheating wives. But it feels so authentic. I appreciate its honesty. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi! I love Mad Men. I love it so very very much. I would definitely count myself as a feminist. I think it portrays the sexist attitudes of the day and how women struggled against them very well and from interesting unique female perspectives. Joan, Peggy, Betty, Sally and Megan sense things are wrong and/or unfair in different ways and find their way. I just love it.

I also love the sets and cinematography. Every single scene looks like it came from an art magazine or professional photo-shoot. The colour palette pleases me lol. The fashion too!

Also, the show, to me, is very literary. Each episode has a theme and it is repeated over and over in fascinating ways. It feels good to my soul.

Despite having many many unlikeable characters, they do feel honest and I’ve grown fond of so many.

Yes the sexism is there but I believe it is handled delicately and with a nod to consequence.

    I just love it <3

Alas! Another fan! Hi, LoriMarie. Pleasure to meet you. ๐Ÿ™‚ I agree with everything you said. I love that each episode has a theme; I love the sets and design, and I love the characters! I also love studying the 1960s as a decade. I used to teach music history, and the music of the 60s was one of my favorite units. I love the soundtracks to each episode because the songs stay true to the years in which the episodes take place. Superb!
